What changes the price
The most important variables are circuit length, conductor and conduit requirements, panel capacity, finished-wall access, indoor or outdoor placement, charger output and whether trenching or service work is needed.
- Distance from panel to charger
- Available electrical capacity
- Indoor versus outdoor route
- Charger amperage and specifications
Charger hardware versus installation
Quotes should make clear whether the charging unit is included. Charger prices vary by output, connector, cable length, weather rating, connectivity and energy-management features.
When extra electrical work is justified
Load management can be a practical alternative to a service upgrade in some homes. In others, planned electrification—such as a heat pump, induction range or second EV—may make broader service work worth considering.
Common questions
EV charger installation cost: common questions
What is the average cost of EV charger installation in Ontario?
Most home Level 2 installations fall between $1,200 and $2,500 including permit and ESA notification, with the charger itself usually $600–$1,300 on top unless it's included in the quote. Outdoor runs, detached garages and panel work move the total above that range.
Why do quotes for the same job vary so much?
Because they often cover different work. One quote may exclude the charger, the permit, patching of finished walls or the ESA notification. Ask every contractor to itemize materials, labour, permit, notification and hardware so you're comparing the same scope.
What makes an installation expensive?
Distance from the panel, running cable through finished walls or ceilings, outdoor trenching to a detached garage, a 60-amp circuit for 48-amp charging, and any service or panel upgrade. Those last two are the usual reason a quote doubles.
Is a cheaper 32-amp installation a compromise?
Almost never for daily driving. A 32-amp charger adds roughly 35–45 km of range per hour, so an overnight charge covers well over 400 km. Paying for 48 amps rarely changes how full the car is at 7 a.m.
Can I get a fixed price before a site visit?
Often yes. A photo of your electrical panel, your vehicle brand, your parking location and the rough distance from panel to charger gets us close enough to quote, and we confirm on site before any work starts.
Does the price include the permit and inspection?
In our quotes, yes — ESA notification and inspection are included as line items. Always confirm this in writing with any contractor, because an omitted notification is a common reason a low quote isn't actually lower.
