How Fast Is Level 2 EV Charging?
Quick answer
Natural Resources Canada estimates Level 2 charging commonly adds about 16–50 km of range per hour and can take roughly 4–10 hours for a full charge. Actual results depend on the vehicle, charger, battery, temperature and available output.
The vehicle sets an important limit
A charger supplies available AC power, but the vehicle's onboard charger determines how much it can accept. Installing a higher-rated station does not make a vehicle exceed that limit.
Charging can also taper or change with battery condition and temperature. Published ratings are useful for comparison, not a promise for every session.
Plan around the energy you replace
Most drivers do not arrive home with an empty battery every night. A practical design compares the energy used during a typical day with the hours the vehicle remains parked.
That approach can reveal that moderate Level 2 output comfortably restores the daily drive overnight, even when a higher-output product is available.
What affects charging time
Charging speed is the result of the complete system rather than one number on a product page.
- Vehicle onboard charger limit
- Circuit and station output
- Battery state and temperature
- Energy used since the last charge
- Charging schedule and departure time
Level 1 versus Level 2
Level 1 uses a standard low-power connection and may suit low daily mileage or plug-in hybrids. Level 2 uses 208 or 240 volts and is the common choice for dependable overnight home charging and many destination settings.
