Can an EV Charger Be Installed Outside in Ontario?

Quick answer

Yes. An EV charger can be installed outdoors in Ontario when the equipment is approved for the location and the wiring, mounting and protection suit the property and manufacturer instructions.

Choose equipment intended for outdoor use

The charger documentation should identify the enclosure and operating conditions it supports. A product intended only for a protected interior location should not be treated as weatherproof.

Look for Canadian safety certification and follow the manufacturer's mounting and connection instructions. Product ratings describe equipment capability; the complete installation must still meet Ontario requirements.

Design for an Ontario winter

Place the connector and cable where they can be kept clear of snow and ice. Cable storage should prevent the lead from freezing into snow, lying in a driveway or interfering with a shovel or snowblower.

Temperature can affect cable flexibility and vehicle charging behaviour. The selected unit should be suitable for the local operating range and remain convenient enough to use every day.

Protect the charger from property hazards

Driveways, narrow side yards and parking areas may expose equipment to vehicle contact, lawn equipment or falling ice. Mounting height, wall position and physical protection should respond to the actual site rather than a generic photograph.

  • Approved outdoor location rating
  • Stable mounting surface
  • Managed cable and connector
  • Safe snow-clearing access
  • Protection from impact where needed

Get the full route assessed

Outdoor work can involve exterior conduit, wall penetrations or buried pathways. A licensed electrical contractor can determine an appropriate method and handle the required ESA notification.
