Should You Buy an EV Charger Before Calling an Electrician?

Quick answer

It is usually safer to shortlist a charger and confirm the property requirements before purchasing. An assessment can reveal the appropriate output, cable reach, location rating and whether load management or other electrical work is needed.

Why the order matters

A charger can be compatible with the vehicle but poorly matched to the property. The proposed output may exceed useful capacity, the cable may not reach the normal parking position, or the enclosure may not suit the installation location.

Confirming these points first reduces the risk of return fees, installation delays or paying for features the vehicle cannot use.

What to bring to the assessment

Share the vehicle model, expected daily driving, charger shortlist, parking position and any future plans for another EV. Photos of the panel, meter area and route can support an initial review, although some projects need an on-site assessment.

  • Vehicle and connector type
  • Charger model and specifications
  • Normal parking position
  • Panel and meter photos
  • Future electrical plans

Safety approval is essential

Natural Resources Canada warns that chargers without safety certification can lead to injury or property damage. Equipment should be approved for use in Canada and installed according to its instructions.

When buying first can be reasonable

If the contractor has already confirmed the model and installation requirements, purchasing the agreed unit can be straightforward. Keep the specification sheet available so the quoted circuit and connection match the exact product.
